Learned from Luther Strong in the Library of Congress. This tune was claimed to have earned him $500 in fiddle contest wins. Reading about him in Stephen Wade's book The Beautiful Music Around Us reveals much about Mr. Strong's life and music.

A great setting, and very fine picking. Brings back memories. I used to have the Strong recording on one of those red translucent Library of Congress records that I bought when I first started picking, but it got lost in a move years ago. It was a real epiphany for me. His Last of Callahan from that collection was one of the first tunes I ever worked up on the banjo.

You sure go back a ways, Don! The Library of Congress CDs are red, too. Stephen Wade's book The Beautiful Music Around Us gives lots of research and history about Luther Strong and his tunes. The Last of Callahan was described as a fiddle tune played on the gallows before a hanging of his great-grandfather, Isaac Callahan. Luther's middle name is Callahan, his mother's last name. Good book to read and comes with 13 tracks researched by Wade.

I just got that book as a gift. It has a special place on my shelf.

Just stumbled across this when I saw Frosty Morn's video this evening. Like your version but his has a different feel; maybe more filler notes or maybe a different tuning. I'm sure you'll see it and like it, it's Adam Hurt's arrangement.

Oh yeah! Banjo playing at it's finest right here. Need to learn this one soon.

Thanks, Joe, Rick and Travis. (I guess after two years it's not to late to thank you, Joe!) Going back to the resource recordings is a treat. They wouldn't be thought of as valuable without good reason.
