Ed Britt and I recorded this in my living room back in January, 2009. I had just worked this up after listening to a fine version by West Virginia fiddler Jack Krack. Ed is playing clawhammer stytle on his Ome, in double C tuning, capoed on the 2nd fret, I'm three-finger picking on my semi-fretless Vega Tubaphone, in open D tuning.

This takes Sugar Hill to a new level for me with an appealing modal sound at the end of the first phrase. The slower tempo, too, makes it a lovely recording.

Janet, Ed and I have nothing to prove anymore, we leave the speed picking to the young contest pickers. I am reminded of the old joke- two bulls, one young and one old, were standing on top of a hill, looking down on the herd of cows below. The young bull said to the old one, I'm gonna run down there as fast as I can and mount me one of them heffers. The old bull said you go right ahead, son, I'm gonna take my time and walk down, and when I get there, I'm gonna mount 'em all.
