It was suggested that I try this tuning, called Cumberland Gap or Sandy River Belle tuning, to arrange Big Sciota. I'm happy with the relative ease of playing it out of this tuning, though it comes out in the key of F and would need a capo if played with a fiddle.

Very pretty! A bit different in a spot or two from the Adam Hurt version--which, I think, is in this tuning. Great tone on the banjo also.

Thanks much, Lew. Yes, Adam plays a beautiful, slower version on his latest CD. He gave me this assignment to encourage me to explore the SRB tuning.

I really like that tuning. My stepson wanted to sing "I've Endured" in F, so I discovered that F tuning works great--nice overtones from brush strokes and all! I also use it for "Sail Away Ladies" and "Nashville Blues," an old Flatt and Scruggs tune.

Here I thought I invented this tuning when I put a capo on in Sawmill and forgot to capo the 5th string... Love this version of Big Sciota! Inspires me to experiment more with this tuning.

Thanks, Lew and Todd. Adam capitalizes in this tuning for any song in the key of G, which I discovered when I began lessons with him. Many of his Earth Tones CD tunes on gourd banjo were made in this tuning, but lowered down to fit the gourd's tone. His labeling of it as Sandy River Belle tuning doesn't appear to be a common one.
