Ed Haley's version. It inspired John Hartford, too, and he played it for the O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack. I heard it on an Ed Haley CD I was able to download and it became one of those "gotta learn" tunes.

Very, very nice. Grace notes worked well on this.

Thanks, gentlemen. I agree, Ken, it's got what the KIDD called "emo." If you listen to Ed Haley's fiddle, he puts in those nice slides that you noticed, Rick, and holds notes even longer than you'd expect. I read that the song probably goes back way over a hundred years, possibly to Ireland. Ralph Stanley has made it a staple that so many know, but this one is much more mournful than his.

Oh my. I would never have recognized this as 'Man of Constant Sorrow' - a tune which I fell in love with as a little boy, listening to my father play Dylan's first album - but I find this version, or variation, to be a unique, profoundly moving and deeply honest musical expression all of its own. Its captivating, and its beautiful. Thank you, Janet, for introducing me to this treasure! I'd love to learn it, but if I do, I may have to at least call it "Ed Haley's Constant Sorrow," or something along those lines, as it seems to me to be a distinct enough piece that it deserves a title of its own... The bottom line: the moment that I first heard you play this, it earned a spot on that great unwritten 'list' of tunes which we all have - those special tunes which speak the language of our souls, which resonate somewhere deep within our being... and what could be more exciting than stumbling across a new one?! Thanks again Janet, this really 'made my day,' to say the least!! :)

Daniyel, I made a tab I can send which includes a MIDI file to listen, too. It's in modal tuning.
