Great tune, and that's some tasty playing Ron. This is a catchy tune and reminds of a few others (e.g., 'Eighth of January', 'Soldier's Joy', 'Mississippi Sawyer'), but it's its own thang. I had never heard this tune before, so I was surfing, and I found a related tune, 'Ruffled Drawers', but it doesn't seem to use the IV chord in the A Part, though the contours are pretty close in both parts. Very cool tune, and you all sound great!

Actually, 'Ruffled Drawers' seems to be just another name for this tune, and another one is 'Buffalo Nickel'. I've listened to different things today, and your rendition is simply outstanding. Now, apparently Paul Warren played this, and I have a transcription, but I'd to hear how he played. Hey, Ron, thanks again for posting, I love finding old-time tunes that work well in bluegrass, and this one really fits the bill.

One of the cool things about playing this with Roland was that he told me he had learned it this way directly from Paul Warren while in between shows on the back of the Lester Flatt bus.

It's such a happy melody, and since I don't have tuners on my Nechville Meteor (which I use sometimes because it's light and very quiet) I'm doing it the easiest way I can think of, i.e., Double C capoed up two frets to aDADE. Easy.

Thanks again Ron, after two days of playing around with this, listening to half a dozen versions, old-time version, kid's versions, Ruffled Drawers (old time version), and especially yours, also testing out different variations, I can now play this at tempo. I discovered that typical Celtic ornaments work in a lot of places; in fact, this tune is easily turned into a hornpipe, but it loses its drive, so I prefer it as a reel. Great tune, and after playing this tune for two days it brought me back to my first string-toy, which played 'Hey, Diddle Diddle' - the nursery rhyme. You can hear it in this tune, go figure! Now wonder why I love this tune: it's hard-wired in me, haha.

Ron, I have five versions now, and I split the tune in two, yup. I've decided that while it goes by two common titles (and then some), it's got two clearly distinguishable melodies (with attendant bass line and harmony) that in my thinking warrants having it go by two different titles. I even worked on it as a hornpipe, almost as an exercise, but you've got it sounding right here, and I wouldn't begin to copy your break, which is artistic perfection, and you own it in my mind. So, I'll be posting tabs soon and putting up an mp3. And thanks again for nailing a great tune and kindling the fire. You're the best!
