Can anyone tell me what the Banjo players is playing for most of this song? Just the backup portion.
Sounds like he’s just doing 321 on repeat. Let me know if it’s more complicated than that please.

Well...
First of all, I quickly glanced over it (YT has blocked any download possibilities, so I can't scrutinize it in detail) and the first thing that comes to mind is the key, D.
If you're listening carefully you can hear the 5th string ringing out. To me it sounds as if the banjo is in open G tuning but with the 5th spiked at fret 7, thereby tuned to A. Simply turning it up from G to A won't be helping much, as you're disturbing the relation between 5th and 1st string. And that might bite you when you're progressing further down the way. For now, try raising the 5th to A and try out the sounds your''re getting from playing a D chord with the raised 5th. Just noodling, I mean.
Indeed I think there are some forward rolls there, but also some reverse TIMTMITM.
Those Forwards won't necessarily start on the 3rd string. I think I am hearing several 2 1 5 repeats too. Just try and see what you're coming up with.
There are some melodic fragments as well and they only work well with a spiked 5th string.
Maybe you can contact that banjo player and tell him you're interested in his playing. You might get some valuable hints, who knows.
If someone asks about my playing I would surely respond

This is a highly interesting, non-runofthemill piece...
This is true. On the other hand, the banjo is far enough back in the mix to make it difficult to get a good read on it.

Michael Arlen Bont isn't on the BHO, is he?
