One of our best marine mechanics/problem solvers said to me one time concerning our Volvo Penta stern-drive installation,"Take a break and make yourself stop thinking about it for an hour.Eat a sandwich, play a game of cribbage and then come back out to the boat and try again.Nine times out of ten everything will just go together like it's supposed to."
He was right...the problem we were having lining up the drive to the engine was gone and everything seated easily.
Best to step away and return after a pleasant experience,it would seem,
Or "when all that fails..." "Eat a sandwich and play a game of cribbage."

That reminds me of one of my uncles ... a pretty sharp dude, but didn't spend a lot of time pondering alternatives. He was greasing the combine one a.m. when the grease gun stopped co-operating. With some colorful language he fired it against the side of the combine, hopped into his pick-up and went to town [8 miles] to get a new one. Everything's falling into place ... 'cept the outlet didn't have any in stock. So he had to humble himself and retrieve the old one. [And it worked well enough that he finished the grease job.]
