^^ one of the perks of teaching Physical Education is that the teacher gets to say when ".... next goal wins."

I am raised with soccer (=true football). When I was a kid we played soccer on the streets and lawns every day from snow disappeared until snow came again - and hockey during the winter (sometimes on the streets without skates and on frosen bogs and small lakes).
We never understand why the Americans where running around with an oval ball and were more wrestling than kicking the ball.

Actually, I will watch some of the matches when the US plays and I watch a lot of college soccer when my university plays (since we are 4-time National Champions). I pretty much know all of the rules!

I have no interest in any professional sports anymore…soccer included. Australian rules football used to be pretty cool to watch, but I can’t find any coverage in the U.S.
I’d rather watch a local high school football game in person…than watch anything of the NFL, NBA, or MLB.
I used to LOVE football (or soccer to some of y'all), but don't now. It is not the game it once was for me. I'll probably watch parts of a game or two, but cannot watch a full game now. I basically find it boring. None of you folks have mentioned darts - now there's a good watch - so I will. Littler, Humphries, Price etc.
As regards this tournament, will it be finished by Christmas?!?! There must be 200 + teams involved! What a farce!

Some sports need some inspiring new rules. For soccer, the goal should be at least twice as wide, and twice as high. For basketball, they need a second 10 point basket, twice as high as the existing basket. For baseball, if you can hit the runner with the ball between bases he’s out. I don’t really know what you can do about NFL football, since the refs seem to just make it up as they go, depending on which team will make the most money by winning. NASCAR should only be able to race stock cars, that they buy from local dealerships the morning of the race. Golf needs a 1 minute shot clock. Hockey needs to eliminate the goalies, and just put an extra man on each team.

If you spent 60 seconds (or less) you could have found out that there are 48 teams (nowhere near 200), and it will be over in about a month (July is nowhere near Christmas).

You're oversized on your "football" goals. Another foot each way would probably do the trick That said, with you on everything else but the hockey - it would just become shots from behind your own goal. Boring.
But you know how in major golf tournaments they move the holes around, and you can never tell where the last one was?
Two or three paintball mines, similarly deployed and resulting in the elimination of a player, might make soccer more interesting.

Yawn. Don't care. Have never attended a pro sport competition of any kind in my entire life. Have not watched a football game since I was a kid. Have never watched an entire soccer game in real time or on TV. As far as that goes, I haven't watched an entire TV show of any kind in well over a decade.
I get most of my entertainment from reading the grumblings of old guys who can't agree about paired 8th notes, banjo strings or the value of various forms of banjo. When I get tired of that, I go to Youtube and watch child prodigies playing impossibly difficult music on the banjo and other instruments.
But all of this boredom ends on August 31 when bird hunting begins.

Icing would still be a thing, and defense could become quite strategically interesting. The whole goalie thing is crazy these days. The goalie wears enough stuff to block a garage door. Maybe do the same thing as soccer, and double the size and height of the goal?
I watch a bit of National Lacrosse League. The all-knowing Google tells me it's about 100 shots on goal >> 25 goals per game, into a net that's 4' X 4'9". That suggests to me that smaller goals and bigger goalies is the way to go.

I'm not a fan, but I did read that this 48 team field is a first. Probably all in search of more $$$.
NFL playoffs go on for more than a month as well, and they apparently expanded in 2020.
Now that I think of it, all of the so-called major sports probably have playoffs that last a more than a month.

Yes. The only sport I watch regularly is college basketball. Only had a passing interest in soccer since my son reffed before he could drive - so I had to go to games. But I watched the US/Paraguay match and the U.S. was playing inspired. I'll watch almost any sport where the play is inspired.

Snooker's fine by me, too, Andrew. Some good Chinese players coming along, Judd Trump's an entertaining watch. But darts is like watching paint dry? Puh-leese!!! I don't mind the odd rugby game...but football (soccer) just doesn't do it for me...and I used to have a season ticket for my local club.
I noticed no-one has mentioned women's sports...

Yeah, they keep increasing the number of teams in these tournaments...and it's not really a good thing (but, yes, it'll make some extra money for some folks). Maybe I just liked things the way they were.
