It's a fascinating piece of musical history, Jack. It must have been very exciting to be a participant.

Jack, your posting inspired me to order a copy of the book "Folk City," about the folk music revival and the scene in NYC in the 1940s and later. Are you familiar with the book? It was published in 2015, but of course is a historical treatment and hence is still relevant. I am looking forward to reading it. Michael

A 1963 interview with Ian & Sylvia discussing the “folk music boom” , and a deep dive into the term “hootenany” …lol   (hopefully the link works in the USA)

Hi Michael,
I met Ian and Sylvia several times when they came to NYC for gigs. They played everywhere such as: Gerdes Folk City, Bitter End, Village Vanguard etc. They were super nice people with a lot of talent....Jack  p.s. I remember that Sylvia broke a string and I had to find one for her and put it on to save them time....so funny...

That is retty cool! It brings to mind my contact with Sylvia Tyson.  I met her in 2004, when in Edmonton we had the inaugural concert of folkwaysAlive!, a collaboration between Smithsonian Folkways and the University of Alberta. I was on the advisory board of fA!. Backstage I asked Sylvia whether she remembered my band Silver Spring winning the amateur band concert at the 1977 Black Mountain Bluegrass Festival in Kelowna, B.C. Sylvia was one of the judges for the amateur concert. Not only did she not remember my band's winning, she did not even remember the festival altogether -- rather a deflating response. Sic transit gloria mundi.

I was a huge fan of Ian & Sylvia back then. My folk group learned some of their songs and I played even more of them. Still do today.

Ha!
Hi Michael,
Yes, that is just how it goes....Jack   laugh But I can tell you that they go to so many shows to see what's happening with Music....so it's possible that Sylvia may not have remembered.....who knows....J   p.s. just remembered: Doug Touchman put on a Bluegrass concert and it was to be judged by a panel of so called experts. I was chosen along with Eddie Adcock and His Wife (can't remember name), to judge who was the best. Eddie flipped how because He couldn't get the number thing down so His Wife and I helpted Eddie. AFter the concert was over Eddie took me back to his trailer and showed me how to play "Heartaches" He was so much fun....I've talked to him about his Brain stimulation for exactly what I have in my hands--Dystonia and it worked for him and it amazed even the Docs....J
