I have a Klaxon submarine diving alarm…about the size of a toaster, and heavy as a block of cement. I had it in my music room for years.

I cut it out of the boiler room of the USS Constellation after she pulled into dry dock to be scrapped., they were using it as a fire alarm. I cleaned it up and painted it, rewired it…and we used it on the submarine until I left. After a house move a few years ago…I have no idea where it is, and it really bothers me. I’ve looked and looked, it must be in a box somewhere…but I can’t find it.

Same with an old early 1900’s railroad switch stand target, the kind with glass lenses and a kerosene wick inside. Again, another large item that should not be difficult to locate.

My wife better not have gotten rid of them.

HVAC metal tape. I needed some to shim my 5th string tuner knob. It wasn’t in the tape box. It wasn’t in the tape drawer. It wasn’t in the kitchen junk drawer. It wasn’t in my tool box in the garage. It wasn’t in the junk drawer in the garage. I must have looked for an hour. I FINALLY found it. Hanging on the pegboard in the basement, next to the heating unit… because that’s where I used it last… go figure.

Knitting patterns that I know I kept in a safe place. That little squeeze bulb thingy that you use to clean out your ears. I know I have one but always have to hunt for it. The top to some of my storage containers. That elusive bedspread that goes on the single bed. Never can remember where I stored it.

When you need a screw, all you can find is nails. And vise-versa.
Tire inflator chuck. Tire pressure tester.
Plenty of tubes of caulk. Some even years old. Where the h@ll's the caulking gun?

Garden hose parts. Every spring I need to repair hoses for my veggie garden of both half-inch and 5/8" I.D.s. And I've probably got six or seven pounds of both male and female - er, I mean, non-gender-specific but one screws in and the other screws out - parts scattered around the campus.

Fat lot of good it ever does me. I always end up buying to replace, and always buy an extra or two just to be sure.

The extras end up wherever all the originals were: somewhere.

If I find nails, I can only find screwdrivers.  If I find screws I can only find hammers.

What really gets me is when I can't find something in the house so I go to the barn, can't find it there so I go to the shed, and can't find it there, either.  Eventually I find it back in the house.

And about half the time I walk out to the barn but forget to take the key to unlock the door, so I have to walk back to the house. Again.

3/8" X 3" Hot Dipped Galvanized Lag Screws. I have a whole 5 gallon bucket of lags dumped on the floor of the shop and do you think I could find just 2 crummy 3/8 X 3? Nope. Had to go to the hardware store and buy the darn things. I'll probably trip over a whole box of em' later this week.
