I've not played the bass for very long. (Obviously)
After 50 years the banjer and vocals are probably unfixable.
But the Bass, what can be done to improve?
Most bluegrass bass players pretty much stick to a solid 1 - 5 beat and maybe do a run up or down at the end of a musical phrase. The problem I hear with the electric bass is, it's too loud in spots and not loud enough to hear in others (or maybe you aren't using the 1 - 5 beat).
Stick with an acoustic bass (or better, a doghouse bass), it's loud enough without the overtones that tend to drown out the banjo. And also stick with the beat using the 1/5 chords. That's what most jams/bands expect from a bass player.
Just my thoughts from being in jams and being in bands for years.
