Suggestion: If the forum rules are not going to be followed and enforced, just drop them or change their name to 'suggestions' or 'guidelines'.

That makes too much sense.

Or define the rules clearly as has been requested by various people many times.

Or just label them as 'randomly enforced' or 'enforced based on undefined terms.'

Herr Schlange-
From my perspective there is no problem. There will always be gray areas, and I think the Mods are doing an exceptional job. I do not have the history on the site that some do, but I appreciate the level of enforcement by the mods.
Thanks.

Give the rules a fair trial ... and then hang 'em! lol

Who is that "schlange" guy anyway?

KE - Posted - 03/21/2011:  17:59:16

kiperr, he is a legendary figure who shows up from time to time -- like the Lone Ranger.

If feldspar1333 says we're okay, that's good enough for me and I shall endeavor to persevere. To be honest, I like to live in the gray areas myself and will do my best to paint them in colorfully.

I will say, however, that feldspar1333 may have to turn in his Posers, Trolls and Malcontents membership card.

Indeed, he is not representing the group very well.
Most of the membership is not happy.
I always suspected him of not being a true malcontent, but simply posing as one.

May I also add, I just joined the BHO union in order to give the ultimate troll to the thread complaining about the BHO "Union". That's gotta count for something, right guys? right? guys?

Oh, I don't know. Maybe that since your participation is almost entirely in the one sub-section of the forum where almost all of the contentious political content arises, you might have a skewed perspective on the state of the entire forum. The "Off-Topic" stuff is an unnecessary (albeit entertaining) appendage of the Banjo Hangout creature. It isn't the vitals.

Go look around the rest of the site sometime. It's mostly a pretty happy place.

Brian

bluemule_77 - Posted - 03/22/2011:  14:34:28

A quick tally of KE's non-archived posts reveals participation (not # of posts, mind you) in roughly 320 off-topic threads. In ALL OTHER banjo-related categories? 13.

Nothing wrong with that. Lots of users probably have similar stats. Maybe there just oughter be an "Off-Topic Hangout." Folks who like that sorta stuff can apply to moderate it. I'm not a mod... but if I were, I'd be glad to not have to contend with the silliness that can erupt in the off-topic forums, fueled mostly by people who don't contribute to the "banjo" part of the site.

Brian

minstrelmike - Posted - 03/22/2011:  14:41:58

And the difference between the arguments in the other 'on-topic' forums is what exactly?

It ain't the topic that causes the argument; it is the people.

Anyone who doesn't like this topic doesn't have to read it.
Same as all the other ones every place on the hangout.

Different folks just like to hang differently than others.

Whoa, there's a banjo forum here?!?! Man, this place has it all!!!

schlange - Posted - 03/22/2011:  15:29:29

I think Brian makes a good point when he says "Maybe that since your participation is almost entirely in the one sub-section of the forum where almost all of the contentious political content arises, you might have a skewed perspective on the state of the entire forum."

The number of "contentious" topics that blur the lines about what is allowed and what isn't is much lower on the "on-topic" forums than the off, because defining a rule-breaking "political" post (and to a lesser degree, a religious one) is pretty much impossible, unless we want to write a book of rules that nobody will read.

So if you spend all your time on off-topic, you're going to tend to have a different view of the mods and the forum than those who don't spend much time there. At least, that's my opinion.

schlange - Posted - 03/22/2011:  15:39:43

Some numbers for you:

Number of new topics in "Off-Topic" since 2/1/11: 856
Number of new topics in all other forums since 2/1/11: 3169
Number of topics locked in "Off-Topic" since 2/1/11: 12
Number of topics locked in all other forums since 2/1/11: 10

% of topics locked in "Off-Topic": 1.4%
% of topics locked in all other forums: .3%

(Note--I didn't include the "Swap Shop" forum in these numbers, since we lock topics on sold ads which would skew things.)

minstrelmike - Posted - 03/22/2011:  15:46:12

How many topics in the banjo forums have had posts deleted tho?

In banjo topics, when people get angry, mods delete posts instead of lock topics.

The rules are enforced differently in the two different topic areas so that could skew the numbers.

Thanx for posting those numbers. I've always wondered.

schlange - Posted - 03/22/2011:  16:12:45

Good point about deleted posts vs locked topics. I felt the same way, so I just checked the numbers. Keep in mind, this counts HIDDEN, not deleted, posts. We generally hide replies now instead of deleting them, so we have a record. I differentiate whole "topics" from "replies" below because they're stored separately in the database. These numbers are for every non-archived topic that exists...whereas the numbers in my earlier post were just since 2/1/11.

Number of "on-topic" replies: 163659
Number of hidden "on-topic" replies: 144
Number of replies in "off-topic": 20033
Number of hidden replies in "off-topic": 40

Number of "on-topic" topics: 10709
Number of hidden "on-topic" replies: 22
Number of replies in "off-topic": 1153
Number of hidden replies in "off-topic": 14

So interestingly--"off-topic" wins this race as well.

We're clearly not doing our job.
And we're not happy about it.

But since bluemule_77 seems to enjoy trolling other people's posts, we should invite him into the group.

Does trolling simply mean "reading a public post and replying appropriately?" It didn't used to.

KE - Posted - 03/22/2011:  21:27:45

Actually, after perusing your recent posts in the 'off-topic', I see no expressions of well wishes for those in poor health, no congratulations on others' accomplishments, no jokes, and most egregiously, no recipes. You need to get out of this b****y thread and go do something positive in the 'off-topic' section. It's nice to enjoy the banjo sections, but there's a lot more to a satisfying life.

I do enjoy the banjo sections. I enjoy some of the off-topic stuff. A satisfying life? I have one, thanks, and that satisfaction has very little to do with the BHO at all. Posting a recipe would not noticeably affect my happiness.

I did create the xtranormal video CELEBRATING the off-topic forum of the BHO. I do occasionally send PMs to folks regarding their achievements or losses, but it's true that it's only users with whom I'm somewhat familiar.

I see. So there's a lot of different ways to contribute to the forum. Some that might not be readily apparent by simply counting the number of posts made in the 'on-topic' forums. Maybe even offering suggestions to improve the forum in the 'suggestions for improvement' forum.

It IS possible to read, enjoy and benefit from any forum -- without posting there.

So, is the off-topic forum to be looked upon as a ghetto, or some sort of no-man's land where the rules don't apply?

jbanjoist - Posted - 03/27/2011:  18:48:11

Eric your numbers prove out you are missing a huge market. Start another website where one section is for banjo and all the others are for everything else. You'll be a gazillionaire.

I sure do miss Ken and his participation...I do read the other forums frequently but often don't post in them. I'm most comfortable in the "other" section where I can get in on the jokes, recipes and ups and downs of everyone's lives, that's just what turns my crank (guess that's why I'm a psychiatric nurse). I know where to go if I want to learn a tune that day or get some musical inspiration, but if I want to really get to know people aside from their banjo interest, which is the obvious common link at the Banjo Hangout, I go to the "other" section. That's where my pals are, and I'm missing my right-hand man.

I have often wondered if a couple of the guys who post only in the off topic even play the banjo, or if they have just found this forum accidently. Life is certainly not all banjo, but so many of a few peoples post seem to be political, doom & gloom and just meant to get a rise of of people. I dont get that.

If you think someone is posting just to get a rise out of someone, you may or may not be right.
Don't respond if you think that's what's happening but don't be so sure your opinion is correct.

Many of the comments that I find the most interesting tend to tick off some percentage of people and from where I sit, that's their mistake of misinterpretation.

And it ain't the off-banjo topics either. Tempers rise all over the place. It just seems to me that the rules are not enforced equally across all topics nor are they enforced equally against all people.

And of course, I think the rules are poorly written to begin with and target the wrong things but that's a different post.
And I'm saying this not to get a rise out of anyone. I say it because imo, that's what I see.
