Hi, does anyone know of any banjo teachers west of Melbourne? Wanting to do clawhammer mainly but 3 finger also of interest.

How far out of Melb are you? I think Gus MacMillan and Peter Somerville (spelling?) teach from the city. You can google them. I am NW Melb Suburbs and am a beginner clawhammer player myself but at this stage am just going from books and what I find online.

Hi Steph. I know both the fellas mentioned above and although they certainly don't suck as frailers, I'd put them more into the bluegrass camp. You could try your luck at the Portarlington jam: I've heard there's a regular old-tyme session in a pub there. You might be able to persuade the banjo player to school you along. BTW - would love a recording of your 'Roadie' song: it's awesome!

I had a lesson with Pete last week which was very helpful. He helped me decide to go with clawhammer. He's in Thornbury though and I'm in Werribee. He is a bluegrass player predominantly but knows enough clawhammer to get me off to a good start.
Hey Gordon I'm proposing a banjo group to the NFFC. You will hear about it very soon. I'll post any details we lock in here too. We'd like to find an experienced teacher for it once a month. Surely there's a skilled banjo player over our side of town!

We have a regular old time jam in Seaford once a month if you or anyone else cares to make it down our way. Friendly group with three claw hammer pickers and other instruments.

Hey Peter would you consisted a group class in Newport once a month? I'm trying to set one up.
Loving clawhammer. So glad I came over to that lesson with you.
He group class would need to cover both. I'm inspired by the Abigail Washburn and Béla Fleck example of putting them together! In the folk club we've got a fairly even spread of interest in both styles.

Great Peter, I'm still waiting to hear from the folk club committee before I can lock in times but it's likely to be 6:30-7:30 pm on a Friday, once a month. We have a club night and an open stage night each month and I'm hoping we can have banjo sessions before them. One a class, one a practice.
Will shoot you that email as soon as things are progressing.
In the mean time, it's bum-diddy all the way!
