BEST TUNING FOR BOWLIN

From atleson on 11/11/2011 5:44:33 PM

Hi all,

what do you find to be the best tuning for the Bowlin?  I like DADF#A, that is, three steps down from G, but i wondered what others have tried.

I spend most of my Bowlin-playing time in dADF#A (key of D) or dGDGA (key of G).

Well, nobody's contributed much here. So I'll put in my favs. dADF#A, dGAF#A,
dADGD, once in a while eAC#EA, dADFA

I usually keep mine tuned down a step (or two) from dADF#A, modal, double & triple G. What can I say...I'm a slacker at heart.

John Bowlin designs, strings, and recommends his banjos to be tuned to the Briggs 1855 pitch standard, i.e. dADF#A vs. gDGBD. Of course pitch equivalent alternate tunings are fine as well. dGDGA vs. gCGCD for example.

Tuning lower shouldn't hurt your Bowlin, but tuning higher with the maker supplied string-gauge could conceivably cause problems and perhaps even affect the warranty.

R.D. Lunceford, your statement regarding possible problems resulting from tuning higher than the recomended Briggs 1855 pitch, I assume the possible problem is the likely tensioning the neck out of alignment? Or might there be other issues?
