Student #825

From hootharp on 12/8/2024 9:42:09 AM

Just joined hangout and group.  Just "rediscovered" my Ramsey Student #825.  This banjo is my first (and only) -- very fortunate!  I will post photos later.  I got it from Roy Andrade who got it from Travis Stuart -- excellent  ju-ju.  I'm working on Boggs' Sugar Baby via Colin Bazsali video.  Curious:  Anybody know what these were selling for back in #825 era?

Go to REVERB.
Five - ten minutes on that site will tell you everything you need to know about selling prices. There was one a few days ago for about $1450.

Not interested in selling (in fact, fondness increasing -- just ordered a hard-shell case to care for her better), but thanks for the reply/suggestion.

Well, as it turns out, I received #824 in my ship on 23 Oct. 2000, and I received #826 two days later. Unfortunately, I didn't have anything to do with #825! I really don't know what they were selling for.

Cheers!

Maybe it's worth clarifying the reason for my post: I have recently "re-discovered" the beautiful sound of this banjo. My enthusiasm led me to the internet where I found there was even a Ramsey Banjo "Group." Cool. So, I thought I would post a few words about mine where it seems appreciation is shared.
I was taken with Dock Boggs back around 2000 (even visited his grave-site in Norton, VA -- too bad the embedded photo had been stolen). Not being a banjo player, I attempted some of his songs on harmonica -- which allowed me to sing -- his lyrics/vocals being a part of his magic. I also fortunately received the banjo, but never did much with it -- could manage some very simple selk-accompaniment on such as Pretty Polly and Oh Death. At the time, i don't think there were instructions on how to play in Docks' style. Recently finding Colin Brazsali's video instruction has been part of the renewed inspiration/appreciation.
Definitely not selling.
Thanks to those who started and participate in this group -- I have been reading a bunch.

Hey ZEPP, that's seriously cool -- the adjacent numbers. From reading posts here, I figured you would be the guy who might know the vintage. I was told that Travis Stuart got it directly from Mike Ramsey, so it makes sense you had no contact with this one.

Anyone have a good guess at the head wrench size I need for this Ramsey student banjo?
Thanks.

AFAIK, Mike used only 5/16-inch hex nuts on his brackets..

I appreciate your knowledge and reply. Thank you.
