How are you learning?

From Delaware on 4/17/2013 6:40:56 PM

What other learning materials do you all use, if any, in addition to The Murphy Method?  I am still in my first year, and i stick almost exclusively to Murphy's dvds because i have the most success and fun.  Interested to know if folks think that's enough for now, or if they are other things i should be learning at this stage?  I am working through I, II, and Misfits.  Thanks.

Timing was my only issue. I got a "practicing techniques"dvd from Tony Trisca . It has good ways to practice staying in time. My main problem is counting off to start a tune. You know how it's supposed to sound once your playing it, but because there's no tab I don't really know the tempo.... It may be just me... Every thing in it's time I suppose....

When I was in my first year I started with the Earl Scruggs book. Learning Cripple Creek from it was a huge turning point, and was a great start. When I got the first Murphy Method tape (yes, tape) my learning skyrocketed. To his day I still go back and review Earls book. I honestly think it was this groundwork that allowed me to succeed with the !urphy Method.

I started with M/M 1 yr ago and found it the easiest way to learn ( FOR ME ), I completed Vol 1 And part of 2, I`ve tried Tabs but that just does`nt work for me, I`m starting to learn the beverly hillbillies tune now from Casy Henry`s dvd.

Hey everybody! I have almost all of Murphy's Videos I bought over time. I have a few more left to get. Just waiting until they come on sale. I have found MM has started me off faster. Their is one guy that I wish to mention on UTube hopefully I can post it down at the bottom so that you can go to it. He kinda expands on a FBM roll in 2 G Octaves that I though was cool to use with practice. I have been using it alot to warm up with. His name is William Nesbitt youtube.com/watchv=aK0y2KFmufc

Ok ya'll it didn't post right but probably if you go to Utube and type in williamanesbitt in the search box you will find him. I hope this helps. But I will never stop using MM and only hope that they keep putting video's out.

Thanks everyone, some great tips here and I appreciate them all! I have a lot to learn, and sometimes I get overwhelmed with the thought, so it helps me to have a plan of attack. As always, the hangout gang has helped me figure it out. :-)

All banjo players should have a copy of Earls book imo. Used it a little but mostly mm lessons and picking out stuff by ear. If at all possible go to some jam sessions and learn to play good backup.
