Hi folks,

I'll be offering two bluegrass banjo workshops at Gryphon Stringed Instruments, 211 Lambert Avenue, Palo Alto on Saturday, December 5th.  Both of these sessions are "hands on & let's play" style workshops, so be sure to bring your instrument - and a capo! Tab examples are provided for everything covered in each session and audio/video recording is encouraged. Workshops are $40 each and advance reservations are recommended by phoning 650-493-2131. A Crash Course in Christmas Songs on the Banjo (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) Ideal for beginners to intermediate students. This year, you'll be ready when someone asks you to play a Christmas song on the banjo at the company party or family gathering. If you're a beginner or intermediate player, you'll learn picking patterns that you can use to accompany all kinds of holiday songs. For those who want a greater challenge, we'll try a few lead arrangements at varying degrees of difficulty. Our goal is to have six songs learned by the end of the workshop!

The Legacy of Bill Keith (2 to 4 p.m.) Ideal for intermediate to advanced students. Banjo innovator Bill Keith expanded the possibilities of what could be played on the five-string banjo when he introduced the melodic style in the early 1960's. Melodic style allows you to play fast moving melodies, like those heard in fiddle tunes, note-for-note on the banjo. Many of the stylistic developments pioneered by such players as Tony Trischka, Alan Munde, Bela Fleck and Noam Pikelny are built upon Bill's melodic banjo inventions. We'll begin by breaking down the elements of melodic style for those who have never played it before and we'll then move on to play some of Bill's most significant melodic-style tunes, such as Devil's Dream, Sailor's Hornpipe & Blackberry Blossom. We'll also analyze the ingenious way that Bill blended Scruggs and melodic style on this path breaking solo to New Camptown Races. Bill was also a stellar jazz player and we'll take a look at his chord-based solo on Auld Lang Syne to complete this survey of music from this master American musician.
