Tuners

From arturo7 on 3/1/2014 12:56:30 PM

One of my tuners has a small crack in the metal. I figure it's best to replace them before it breaks. Can anyone recommend a quality set of tuners that will work on a Series B?

thanks

Can you find any original tuners that match? I recall seeing some on ebay some weeks (or longer) ago. The housing is probably die-cast, but could possibly be repaired by a jeweler, maybe with a laser welder. Good luck.

I want to remove the originals so they are intact if I ever decide to sell the banjo.

You will need to remove one to measure it to see if any of the modern tuners available will fit; there are several different-sizes available.

The shaft holes in the peg head are usually too narrow and will need to be opened to a wider radius to accommodate modern tuners. Personally, I would leave that kind of work to an experienced luthier that can do the job cleanly and correctly. PS this is a very common problem with the Page tuners that were OEM on Paramount banjos. They are extremely fragile.

Anyone have experience with ABM small shaft planet tuners?

Call or email Bob Smakula at Smakula Fretted Instruments in Elkins, West Virginia. He replaced the tuners on my Paramount Style A (see link below). Bob does outstanding work. He can be reached at 304-636-6710 or his email address is sfi@smakula.com.
