Stabilizing a Paramount resonator and other tips

From Noto on 5/18/2015 11:21:16 AM

Every now and then, one clip of my resonator moves and the resonator kind of half- falls off when I stand up. Would any of you have any tips to more tightly secure the resonator?

Also, what would you recommend to clean the chrome.

And, if the serial # is 9771, what year would my plectrum be?

Thank you very much,

I suppose tightening the screws that hold the clip slider in place would be a great start.

I would suspect that it is nickel-plated; chrome plating was not used on banjo parts very often during the Paramount era. Check with a jeweler for an appropriate polish for nickel, as it is softer than chrome.

Thank you Mosco, I will find the right cleaner.

The Paramount banjo resonator mounting is a three point system. It depends on the two clips and a good heel fit. The two clips use the spring action of the flange to pull the resonator up tight. If the felt lining in the resonator heel notch has worn down the resonator will shift around and come loose. Check the quality of the felt in your banjo's resonator notch.

Your 9771 is probably a 1928 build.
