6 String Necks

From Leslie R on 3/4/2015 1:32:14 PM

Mind if I ask how you were able to obtain a 6 string neck? Did you purchase a banjo which came with a 6 string neck? Maybe some of you converted a 4 or 5 string to a 6 string banjo, by installing a 6 string neck.  I've done it both ways.  Doing a conversion can get costly, in a hurry.

Thanks

Leslie

Brooks Masten built 2 6's plus a neck for a Yosco pot I had. Also had 6's built by Ramsey, Lee, Romero, Flescher, Christian Stanfield and David large. Have one to be built by Greg Gailbreth of Buck eye banjos. The 2 I kept were Brook's first and the Brooks/Yosco. It does get pricy but I have been able to sell them fairly easily.

I am intrigued with the Brooks/Yosco. I managed to find some photos of a Yosco. Not your typical banjo. It must sound terrific, b/c you have had some nice banjos. Does that banjo have a 6 string neck on it? If I located one, do you think it would potential as a 6 string banjo?

Yosco made some very neat tenor, mando-banjos, and guitar banjos. Mine is a 12 in pot. Ray Alden loved Yosco's and my pot came off of one of Ray's banjos. Brooks did a beautiful job as usual.
I would be glad to share what I have worked out as to the dimensions that work for me and string gauges etc. I can also send you more pictures of the Yosco 6. I also have an original Stewart 6 from 1895.

WOW. I would really like to learn all I could from you, George. I stumbled into 6 string playing 1 year ago this Saturday. I've learned a little bit, mostly by lots of error. This changed my life. In the past year, I've obtained a 31 Gibson GB1. It was at Gruhn's for a long time. I have also purchased a 1925 Vega Imperial Electric, 1931 Vega Vegaphone and a custom 12 string banjitar on a 14 inch rim from GoldTone. I've converted a 1927 TB1, that had a Rickard pyramid tone ring, a Paramount Triple X, and a Paramount . Right now, I have 6 string necks being made for a 1925 Gibson BB, and a Weymann Style 3. I'm gonna slow down this year, but I'll add a couple to the litter. I would really like to land a Weymann 540, but those are very hard to come by.
The Yosco appears to have a 12 inch outer rim, with an inner rim, that is elevated above the outer rim, kind of like an archtop. I've got to ask. It doesn't look like it would have a large surface area, within the inner ring. It must have a great sound though, b/c it's one of your favorites. What does it sound like?
