New Picker

From AceRiverRat on 1/21/2013 3:09:26 PM

How's it going?  I'm brand new to the banjo (just bought a Gretsch last week), and I have absolutely no idea how to play it.  I've been trying to find any resources to learning the basics and any concerts/jams/etc...  If ya'll have any links or info then please let me know.

Thank you,
Shawn

A.R.R.,
Welcome to the fold. I'd suggest a teacher. What part of the State do you call home?

Absent a teacher, there's two basic ways do do it by yourself: (1) by ear and (2) by tablature.

If you go the "ear" route, you might want to check out the "Murphy Method" line of cd's. If you go the "tab" route, there's any number of books on the market.

If you're in Austin you can find good teachers through Fiddler's Green on 35th St.

I live in the Livingston area. I've found a teacher in Spring, but have yet to make it out there. He plays at Hickory Hollow BBQ in The Heights every month. I'll check out the Murphy Method cd's, too. I really appreciate all the information.
