Deering banjo

From tonytcc on 9/15/2015 2:07:55 AM

I'm looking at treating myself to a banjo - from a tangle wood Union 24 to a deering

Im thinking along the lines of eagle II /kavenaugh or a Sierra - both about £1500/£1600 from eagle.

Wrestling with blue grass (it's a slow game !) as well as gigging with some Morris folky stuff with the black pigs.

Anyone had any experience of these banjos or the shop.

Tony,I don't own a Deering but i've played quite a few, I found the Sierra to be an excellent instrument, if you shop around you may be lucky and get one secondhand, as others have said RKs are decent banjos but in my opinion not in the same class as most Deerings.

Firstly, Eagle music is excellent shop. I buy everything from their website ( I'm a four and a half hour drive away ). But I visited once and they are great, although I found they pushed deerings a little too hard which seeing as you're interested in them shouldn't be an issue.

Anyway to the banjo. They are both great but, I'm going to throw something else into the mix. Czech banjos, specifically Janish banjos. You can get one for around the same price. They are amazing, and incredible value for money. Check out his website, I also have a video of me playing redwing on my Janish, and although the playing isn't the best you can get an idea.

I bought a Sierra in 2008 and have never regretted it. Lovely high quality, highly and easily playable banjo. Buy one.

Hi there. You can't go wrong with a Sierra: the quintessential, American, standard banjo. If you fancy a Deering day-out, then the Kruger Brothers will be visiting Eagle music in early Nov. Worth waiting for, I believe.

Just to add another option I have a Deering Vega Bluegrass Senator same price as the eagle great instrument and a little lighter (easier on the back).
