Banjo Club Meeting Review

From Wardjrz on 8/2/2012 12:57:10 PM

Wakefield Banjo Club                                        Tuesday 31st July

We finally managed to get a small gathering together to re launch the Wakefield Banjo Club. Thanks to Andy, Richard and Alan, for joining me in what was, hopefully, the first of many meetings. Alan travelled over an hour each way to be there – now that’s commitment!

We had four people in a room with different skill levels and varied experience but we all had one thing on common – we love playing the banjo.

We met at the Red Lion in Ossett, where the Club used to meet, and thanks go to the Landlord for welcoming us back. He came in on his day off to say hello. What’s more we weren’t asked to leave after we started playing!

We tried group picking which for some of us was a first and for most of us was a challenge. The opportunity to play in a group can really help develop your play and timing for those having lessons or self teaching. Playing in a group offers a safe environment for those of us who are shy Banjo players as you don’t feel quite so exposed.

The playlist for the evening was mainly made up of songs from the book we have all learned from, we covered:

Blackberry Blossom

Wildwood Flower

She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain

Little Maggie

Cumberland Gap

Lonesome Road Blues

We played through each tune a few times and even in just one session it was obvious that we were getting better – imagine what we’ll be like after a few more sessions when we have had chance to practice a bit beforehand!

We tried a few bits and pieces of other music too, had lots of talk and traded banjo information, oh and a couple of pints.

All in all it was a really good, relaxed night where we all took our part in keeping the evening going. It was such a good night that before I realised what time it was we had to leave as the last orders bell rang.

We agreed that it would be good to select a few pieces of music in advance so everyone who was planning to come could practice if they wanted. For next time our playlist will include:

Little Maggie

Lonesome Road Blues

She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain

It doesn’t matter which version you learn, as we found that different versions of a tune can piece together quite nicely.

Future meetings will provide opportunities for those who want to do a solo slot as well as the Group picks.

We meet next on Tuesday 28th August and then the last Tuesday in every month after that. If you can suggest a piece of music that you’d like to see in the group playlist let me know and we can add it on.

At future events we hope to have a small Hobro Music stand there so you can pick up those little essentials too.

Please come along and give it a try, you never know you might like it – the only way we can keep the Banjo Club going is if we attend.
