Simon
I enjoyed my first event and will be joining the group as often as possible but unfortunately I am out of the Country that week so won't be able to attend.
Keep up the good work and I'll see you in April.

Not warm, probably quite cold Simon

Every year at the end of March we go away. This year it is 5 blokes (and a banjo) going to a place called Delgatie Castle near Turriff in Aberdeenshire.
Hopefully we'll have lots of laughs, visit as many distilleries as we can fit in, drink whisky, play some golf, drink some more whisky, do a bit of walking, drink the odd whisky, try fly fishing (for the first and probably only time), drink a little whisky, sail on a boat trip in the North Sea, drink a whisky or two and then have the occaisional snifter.
Glad I'm not driving.
Of course in these times we all enjoy our whisky responsibly.........

John

Sounds great John, by the way, while you're in Scotland you should try the whiskey ;-)

I’ve been trying to master Arkansas Traveller this week (thanks for the tab Tim) but there’s a whole lotta learnin’ involved with this one - it’s a melodic fiddle tune with a circular scale and tricky thumb fretting up the neck. I’m hoping to give folks a rendition at the next meeting if I manage to crack it. Also I thought I could do an “easier” one like Coming Round the Mountain and/or Down the Road. Don’t want to clash with anybody else though. Are you going to do another tune Beer Junky – I expect if so it’s not one of the ones I’ve mentioned?? I think that Chris from Sheffield may be doing one too but I’m not sure what that may be. Have you heard anything ??

Regards

Lonesome

Not heard anything yet Lonsome, I think I will play St Annes Reel, love the tune. More importantly I've just bought a new Banji, plumbed for a Deering Vega Old Thyme Wonder. I wanted a second instrument I can take on holiday (a bit lighter & cheaper than the Eagle). Added bonus is the OTW will be great to switch to for some Claw Hammer.

That’s a good looking piece you’ve bought yourself Beer Junky. What happened to the one you won in a raffle – have you raffled it onwards ?? I was half thinking about buying myself a second instrument and then I thought that I’ve only had my first one 6 months and I can hardly play that ! – although I do fancy an open back. I’m sure it will happen one day though just not sure when. I’ve made some good progress this weekend with Arkansas Traveller so things are looking good for the next meeting. I’ve got a lesson tomorrow with Tim so I’m sure he’ll put me right on one or two things.

Great going Lonesome, I'm looking forward to your rendition. As for Banjo's, the Banjo I won in the raffle (that started my obsession) was a few years ago. That was an Ozark & it was awful, I tried to teach myself but never got anywhere. I sold that on last year & bought my Eagle 2 in March 2010, thats when I started learning properly, started my lessons with Tim in May the same year. The Old Tyme is now my second Banjo, the Eagle is my pride & joy and I don't think I will ever part with it. I wanted a second Banjo that I can take on Holiday and to jamming sessions. The Old Tyme is perfect, I always intended to learn Claw-hammer at some point and the Old Tyme kills two birds with one stone, it's a great sounding banjo, really warm and quite unique and allows me to practise 3 finger style whilst on holiday but also has the scooped neck so I can go to town on frailing. The only draw back is the scoop replaces frets 18 and onwards but hey-ho all that means is I can't play tunes that far up the neck whilst on holiday. If your after an open back then I would definitely try out the Old Tyme, I fell in love with it straight off.

As for tunes, I've pretty much nailed St Annes Reel and now looking for a second piece, not sure just what but I'm hoping to impress even Tim ;-)

Speak to you soon.

Thanks for the advice Beer Junky. I will certainly have a good look the Old Tyme when I’m ready for my next purchase. Sound like you’re making good progress if you’re starting to explore Claw hammer as well as three-finger stuff. I’d like to have a crack at that some time in the future but at the moment I’m putting all of my energies into Scruggs style and more recently melodic style tunes. I’ve spent most of the week on Arkansas Traveller again - the second bit of the tune was not as easy as I had hoped and the whole thing has been a big learning curve into the melodic circular scale world - but it’s been a journey I have enjoyed and hopefully should come out of in one piece!

Keep up the good work!

Cheers

Glad your enjoying it Lonsome, I'm surprised you've had such a struggle with Arkansas Traveller though, have you not covered the melodic section in Janet's book? I would recommend a visit if you haven't, the circular scale exercise is great, I use it as my warm up before every practise. I would also recommend Banjo Brad's left hand exercises on this site, they're brilliant (banjohangout.org/lessons/brows...opic&id=5)

That said there are some tricky bit's in Traveller, hooking your thumb over for the 5th String is really uncomfortable and in section B the two triplets definitely sneak up on you ;-)

Looking forward to meeting up again and we can swap more tips.

That was a cracking night Beer Junky. Getting up at the front and doing some tunes for the first time is certainly an experience that will live long in the memory! A definite rite of passage. Are you still going ahead with the video? That would be interesting !!!

Cheers

Lonesome
