Got started on the banjo when I bought an old one at a junk store in Cleveland back in 1970, it was an strange one with a brass tension hoop that looked like a ship's port hole, kind of constructed like the mountain banjos. When I finihished repairing it I then felt I needed to learn how to play, bought the Pete Seeger book and from there and listening to records from the Library (lots of the banjo stuff was missing from the Library though) decided on Down picking. Glad I did. Since I was not interested in learning Scruggs style I think I gave the impression to some that I did not like that style of music, but that is not the case, I just felt I needed to stick to one style.
