As of today I am 3 months and 10 days into my banjo journey. I've really enjoyed learning to play this instrument, discovering its history, finding a new community of musicians and developing a new creative outlet for myself. Playing music has never come to me naturally, my brothers were born with that gene, I am learning slowly but surely. I also found out my great uncles played the banjo waaaay back in the day?! I am evermore determined to be a confident banjo player!
The journey started with group lessons at a local music school and when that ended, I started going to a weekly beginner friendly old time/bluegrass jam. Since then, I've been called on/encouraged to lead a song twice. Each time my hands were instantly sweaty, I caught a lump in my throat, mixed up lyrics and I didn't realize how loud I needed to sing to be heard over several banjos, a fiddle, mandolins, guitars, dobro and an upright bass! Good lord, I was shaking in my boots. Everyone was kind, very forgiving and helped me along throughout the song. I'm grateful for their graciousness during my trainwreck.
I'm going to show up again this week and try to strum along to songs I've never heard before. I'm not to beat myself up for not "getting it" yet. I'm going to continue to jot down songs we play and add it to an ever-growing playlist of tunes to learn. I'm going to smile and laugh and sing along. Most importantly, I'm going to tune my banjo and keep showing up, for myself.

Just started learning to play the banjo! I'm primarily interested in learning clawhammer, juba/stroke style. I currently play on an open back Gold Star GE-1 Prospector. Eventually I'd like to try playing on a fretless banjo.
