I started playing banjo in 1971, and learned to the basic rolls and how to pick a few tunes at that time. After 4 or 5 years I drifted away from it since it was a closet picker. I picked it back up in November 2005 and have been playing every day since. I went to the Pete Wernick jam camp preceeding the Joe Val Festival in February 2006, and I have been jamming regularly since. I play with other people twice a week on average. A couple of years back I got into a band with several of the fellows I jam with. My banjo playing is intermediate level, but I am working hard to continuously improve. These past five years have been the most fun that I have had with music in my life. I also got involved with singing and that has been great. I never thought I could sing, so I had never really tried. I have discoverd that while my singing is not great, it is adequate. So besides playing the banjo, I work on continuously learning new songs. I have a pretty good jam list built up, comprised mostly of very traditional songs. I find that in most jams you don't have to be able to play your instrument great, especially if you are willing to lead and sing songs.
