Twice named International Bluegrass Music Association’s Bass Player of the Year, Mark Schatz has toured and recorded with a stellar array of artists including Bela Fleck, Tony Rice, John Hartford, Tim O’Brien, Nickel Creek, Claire Lynch, and Sarah Jarosz.. This versatile multi-instrumentalist has two of his own solo recordings, Brand New Old Tyme Way and Steppin’ in the Boiler House, on Rounder Records, which feature his own eclectic blend of original compositions on the clawhammer banjo, and two bass instructional videos on Homespun. Mark currently resides in Berkeley, CA where he plays with many local bands including the Manning family’s Charlie Torch, Jesse Appelman’s West coast Stringband Project, Eric & Suzy Thompson, and Laurie Lewis’s Men of Note. He continues to tour nationally with Bela Fleck’s My Bluegrass Heart Band, his duo, Mark Schatz & Bryan McDowell, and on his own as Mark Schatz – The Solo Concert. He’s always quick to add color and kinetic energy to a show with humor, hambone, and Southern Appalachian clogging!
