Hello and good day to all the good folks of BanjoHangout.org,
I first held a banjo many years ago, back when my musical interests were shifting/expanding from Jazz and Orchestrated into folk roots (from all over the globe) and Bluegrass. I rented a bluegrassy looking banjo from a local shop, picked up the Earl Scruggs book and started to teach myself rolls.. it did not stick, but what I did learn from that early experience was that I was not terribly interested in committing myself to learning bluegrass banjo.
Years later, after listening to a lot of folk/banjo I came to realize that although I do really enjoy listening to bluegrass, I am much more interested in Appalachian, Traditional Folk & Old Time Mountain Music... even Minstrel Banjo.
One day last winter I came across an Epiphone open backed banjo on Kijiji for $80 and decided to pick it up and try clawhammer, and loved it! So, I have decided that it is time to step up my banjo game and actually learn how to play this winter. After much research and deliberation I decided to go with the Deering Artisan Americana banjo with scooped fretboard... that I just received today!!!
Now, I'm hoping to find a community as well as an instructor/mentor locally who can help me navigate my way through the beginner/intermediate phase and into a position where I am able to play with other musicians at kitchen parties and bon fires... in comes BanjoHangout.
I'm looking forward to learning from this wonderful community (that has already helped out immensely in helping pick out a banjo) and hopefully being able to contribute back to it where I can.
Music makes life better... play the banjo!
