The Artists Lament
Inspiration, you mighty tree
Why have you forsaken me?
Left me, cold, down on the floor
Abandoned on some lonely shore,
I try....so hard....to play the song
But my Banjo..... it just won't play along
The chords and notes... all over the place!
Of pleasant tunes.... there is no trace
Dog house!!, you make me sleep
Through the cracks, you make me peep
Whimper, groan, howl at the moon
O won't you give me just one tune
Bad timing, rattles, lots o' twangs
Fretboard, resonator, bridge and fangs
3 fingers, all filled with lead
'Stay the path' was what you said
"STAY THE PATH!!, you must be true
From the masters, take your cue
Easy meals, you'll get none here
Back to work, or I'll kick your rear"
Practice, practice, my forlorn lot
What, no "Opry", there isn't a spot?
My audience, the dog shall be
Applause?.... a mere lick of the knee
But wait, what's this, oh can it be
Inspiration, you've come back to me!!
A robin, its feathers aglow
Has landed squarely on my banjo
Why now, why not then
Cackle, cackle you plunky hen
Out of the blue, into my picks
music, music, the cripple cricks!
I found you, or you found me
But Inspiration, why had you forsaken thee?
"Forsaken you not, I was here all along
Now quit you whining, and play the song"
