Took lessons for two years, then quit because I wasn't learning anything new. I found that I was just practicing the same old skills- strictly melody because my instructor had no interest in taking on more challenging pieces or even helping me through them. I realized that since i have dropped lessons, I haven't really done much practicing or playing, but I didn't give up on my banjo. I want to learn fun music, however I can't decide what skill level I am at right now. I'm probably somewhere between Novice and "Purty Good". But I can't decide a good difficulty of music that will help me improve and move on. Another problem I have is that I can't read sheet music (I can read tabs, though), nor do I know the difference between an A or a B or an F or a G, so that makes things a little harder when I want to play a song that wasn't neccessarily meant to be played on the banjo. So far, I've really enjoyed playing Bela Fleck's Bluegrass Sessions songbook, although it's really tough to learn and I'm nowhere near playing it well. I'm also interested in learning some Celtic tunes- I still haven't tried that yet. I really want to get to the point where I can play very well- performing or jamming. I am hoping that Banjo Hangout can help me reach other musicians who may have tips or suggestions to help me play better.
