I've played guitar for 20+ years, but mostly so I can sing along - I have no flatpicking chops. When I picked up the banjo a year ago it just felt right. The 3-finger syncopated picking just seems to click with me. I learn songs by learning the words/melody and my goal is to be able to play backup and sing, and also take the occasional break. I've worked through the Hohwald book (mostly) and a couple of others... but generally I pick up the Bluegrass Fakebook and find a tune I want to play, figure out how to sing it with the guitar and then go look for tab for the banjo. Bluegrass songs I'd like to be able to play: Nine Pound Hammer Wreck of the Old 97 Ole Slewfoot In the Pines Darling Corey I also want to learn how to improvise (or work out) banjo accompaniment for songs that are not traditional bluegrass, like the Beatles "Don't Pass Me By", and Steve Earle's "Mercenary Song" and "Tom Ames' Prayer", and Don Williams' "Stay Young", or James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James", and the Grateful Dead's "Monkey and the Engineer", and so on.
