Practically all my cousins are banjo folks (hey Tony!). I had a grade-school music teacher who was also a banjo type. I never really thought about picking one up till I really heard some old-time sounds. The frailing just captured my ear. I used a video to learn some basics but didn't get anywhere. Then I caught Jody Stecher and BIll Evans do a Secret Life of Banjos gig at the Freight n Salvage in Berkeley and that was that. It took a little pestering but eventually Jody became my teacher, and the instrument and experience of playing has transformed for me.
