Ive owned a banjo since about the beginning of September 2008. It was intentinal in all honestly, my son's mom kicked me out and moved another man in. I was hurt and depressed and I stopped drinking when I found out I was going to be a dad almost 3 years ago. So I needed another outlet. I stopped in to talk to the old man that runs a local music store. And I walked out with a banjo and have been channeling my depression out by opening a new chapter in my musical life. The store owner since then has agreed to give me free lessons if I agree to play with him in his gospel bluegrass band once we feel Im ready for the road. He also added that if I prove myself as a banjo player he'd even buy me a upgrade over the Woods Instruments banjo that I bought. Im not counting on that though and in all honesty I'll probably be looking for a upgrade as soon as I prove to myself that Im going to stick with this instrument. Ive never really been a huge bluegrass fan. I use to listen to some with the owner of the old pool hall in town from time to time and he tried to get me to go to some festivals with him but I never did. I like the sound of the music but sometimes the vocals drive me away. I actually bought my first acoustic guitar off the man I got the banjo from around 15 years ago. And I actually sold it to the owner of the pool hall one time when I was in a pinch for cash (I think I needed some drug and/or booze money). The old man that runs the music store has jam sessions with his friends every saturday morning in the shop and Ive sat in several times and listened to them jam. It will be interesting playing with a bunch of people old enough to be my grandparents. But this new chapter doesnt have much of a following in my neck of the Hoosier state. Ive since discovered some newgrass style bands that I really enjoy all around and some more...for of a lack of better terms...tradtional style folk music. I honestly beleive its time to start shopping my Randall half stack and Ibanez Iceman away because I dont think I'll need that type of equipment for a long long time. On a side note I also recently purchased my 2 year old son his first real 6-string. The little man loves music of all kinds personaly and his mom will disagree with me I think his favorite is Stevie Ray Vaughn. Besides the 6 string, dad has acquired him a 3 peice drum kit and a ukelele. I think he favors the kit and I'll probably have to get him a bigger kit soon.
