Bought my first banjo in 1974 in Germany (USAF)..the Framus has been with me ever since, although it is heavily modified. I soon realized that I would be a mediocre 3 finger banjo player forever, and there is nothing worse than a mediocre 3 finger banjo player (except perhaps for a mediocre player who thinks he or she is good. Somewhere I heard"Dead Man's Tune" (possibly on WAMU American University Public Radio) and they mentioned it was played clawhammer style. That was it. Anyway, I found Ken Perlman's book and learned what little I know basically from that. Bought the Gold Tone WL-250 in January 2001 and that is my main jamming banjo. The Framus is fun for playing around the house, but not very loud. Around here most of the jams are "bluegrass" oriented (although precious little gets played). The WL-250 is loud when I want it to be. My "style" is heavy into full chord brushes and lots of drop thumb. I use index, middle, and ring finger depending on the tone I want... although I don't at this point even think about it. My current "style" evolved after I had to relearn to play following a stroke in 2004. I was a little better prior to that event... but now I am truly a "stroke style" player.
