Return from Ireland and Scotland

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Well,

I dont post much on this, but I think this is relevant. I just spent 3 weeks in the west and north of Ireland, as well as the highlands and islands (skye) of Scotland. I was suprised to hear very little traditional music. On the last night, I was fortunate enough to hear a group of four young brothers play traditional jigs and reels at a wonderful bed and breakfast in the Mourne Mountains outside of Belfast (the b&b was called Cnocnafeola). The youngest one played the accordion (he was no older than 6), followed by his self taught 12 year old boulderan (did I spell that right) playing brother, a 14 year old guitarist, and a 17 year old brother who played the tenor banjor.  While I appreciate my five string and the clawhammer tradition the most, I was thrilled to hear some semblance of scotch-irish tradition while I was over there. Previous to these young men I been force fed cover bands of james taylor and johnny cash.... bombarded with country western bands and bluegrass vocalists. All music I'm far too familiar with... these gentlemen at the bed and breakfast showed me their OWN musical tradition and how wonderful it is.. and will be.

I think it should remind us music that is culturally passed down to us is the music that most strongly represents us. Always understand your musical roots and why they are so special.

I live in country that has few banjo players available, I can't learn from my peers. So I learn from the internet!
