I picked up the banjo 10 years ago because I didn't know a thing about music, and the guitar had too many options for styles (I would have tried bluegrass one week, flamenco the next). Turns out the banjo has many options as well, but it does lend itself to focus until you learn this fact. I spent a year learning, and then had to decide whether I wanted to continue. About that time I got into my first jam session, and was absolutely hooked. I practiced 8 hours a day (if I wasn't working). After a few years I took up clawhammer, and was hooked once again. I love the old stuff. To me, it's all about the old mountain music, which is what good Bluegrass is. If it ain't old, I ain't sold. For the last two weeks I have been learning the fiddle. It's good to be back at the start of something again. It's for this reason that I'm finally a member here. When I started picking, I didn't have regular internet access, and then I didn't feel like spending a lot of time online discussing what I should be doing anyway(playing banjo). Now I see the value in the forum after being involved with the Fiddler Hangout.
