I fully admit to being a musical dilettante. I've played trumpet for decades, several other brass instruments, tin whistle, great highland bagpipes, fiddle, and now the five-string banjo. Of all these instruments, only the banjo lends itself to practicing after dinner at the kitchen table while conversation continues around me. (I tried it once with the pipes, but the drones got caught in the ceiling fan...) Although I initially tried to teach myself clawhammer, my wife (the daughter of a Kingsport, Tennessee gal) insisted that I learn bluegrass, so that's where I currently am. I'm learning from the Mel Bay Jan Davis book. My skill-level is currently at "that is almost beginning to sound like music".
