Oh yes, been a bit lax on the banjoing front for some time now.
I bought a book that I thought would help me improve, but which said two things that put me off quite considerably.
1. 'If you can't spend 30 minutes a day, every day, then don't bother even trying to learn the banjo. You will fail and you will always be crap. Loser!' Well, I can't always guarantee spending 30 minutes every day. I have a life, you know. Not a very helpful comment, I felt.
2. On the cover of the book it says 'It doesn't get any easier'. Well that's bloody discouraging as well. I thought the idea of buying a learning aid was for things to get a whole lot easier.
Rubbish book.
So I've struggled a bit because finding the time is not always easy. I tinker now and then and make a fair noise, but it was only recently that I discovered the problem behind my enthusiasm.
When I started I did a bit of research on t'internet and read a bit about setting up the old girl. I learned to measure the right place for the bridge to go, leave pencil marks so you don't have to measure every time etc. etc. But I got it wrong by about 1.5cm and consequently had a devil of a time tuning the beast up so it sounded good all along the fretboard.
Having discovered this schoolboy cock up and corrected it, I now sound a bit better. I've bought another book which actually wants me to improve, (rather than telling me what a useless lump of musical horseshit I am and always will be), and I plan to learn that bloody Cripple Creek if it kills me.
What I really need though, is a kind, nurturing banjo teacher (preferably fit and female, but I'll take what I can get) who wants to help me get over the initial barriers and guide me forwards. Unfortunately banjo teachers are rarer than an undercooked panda steak round these parts, so I'll just have to carry on playing with myself for now.
So to speak.

Today I am a banjo virgin. I am the proud owner of a 5 string beauty made by Stagg and I'm looking forward to taking my first tentative plucks towards bluegrass and old time country heaven. Since I'm a complete beginner I think I might track my progress on here and hope to learn from all you experienced hands, since there aren't any banjo teachers here in rural North Hertfordshire that I can find. I've played guitar for over 20 years, but only for fun. Wish me luck, I think I'll need it.
