I am 35 years old. When I was 12, my dad first taught me the basics on playing the 5-string banjo. Since then I have gone through numerous cycles of abandoning it then taking it up again. At the moment I have been practising regularly for over a year. I have taught myself many tunes, mostly from Earl Scruggs's book: "Earl Scruggs and the 5-string Banjo" book, and also a few melodic tunes from Tony Trishcka's "Melodic Banjo". A couple of years ago I also took up the fiddle. The main reason I took it up was because I wanted to play American-style bluegrass / old-time fiddle tunes. At first however, I was restricted to learning Scottish and Irish style tunes, as that was all my teacher was able to teach me (try finding a fiddle teacher in Scotland who plays fiddle American-style, I wasn't able to find any!). I have recently however began learning some bluegrass fiddle tunes from a book. The banjo however remains my main instrument.
