I started playing bluegrass banjo when I was 12. I played semi-professionally in the 1980's with different bluegrass bands. From 1988-1992, I was the banjo-fiddle player at Worlds of Fun's "Country Junction," a KC amusement park. It was a fun gig, and life was free and easy then. In 1993, I won the Kansas State Banjo Championship and took 3rd that fall at the National Championship in Winfield. I got married the next year. 2 daughters arrived in the next 3 years, and I found myself playing less and less, and being constantly dissatisfied with my music. I probably would have quit music altogether had not Jim Curley, owner of the Mountain Music Shoppe in Shawnee, Ks., introduced me to the minstrel style in 2000 and gave me my first "frailing" lesson. I've always loved history, and he knew I would dig this style. So, I'm now a bluegrass ex-pat, but not really an old-time player, either, since I exclusivley study 19th century banjo. It ain't a bad life.
