Back in the early 90's I heard Western, MD fiddler Grover Broadwater playing a tune like this and I adapted it to the clawhammer. He may have played it in E or A modal. Last time I say Grover was about 4 years ago in Elkins WV and he didn't remember me or the tune. (I've spent quite a bit of time around him, but he's getting old.)

I never learned banjo from a technical standpoint... just experimented and played... somewhere along the line I put 6/8 tunes (jigs) on the banjo. You don't hear'em that way very often... This is from a fiddler named John Meighen a fiddler in his 80s in 1930 Jacktown, in Greene County Pennsylvania. I was familiar with the Irish version "The Frost is All Over",, but thought Meighen's melody was far superior. (At least to my ears.) Fits nicely on the clawhammer banjo and I play it about the same way on the fiddle too. This tune was also known in Colonial America as "Hey to the Camp." So it has a lot of roots in the USA and the "old country" as well. Musicologist Samuel P. Bayard collected it from Meighen in the 1930's and included it in his book "Dance to the Fiddle..."
