Beginning banjo
My plan for beginners is to tackle the basics, develop good habits and work with you on learning your first tune within a couple of lessons, depending on your ability. I have a very simple and surprisingly successful approach to making this happen with some standard country tunes you would recognize.
Novice - intermediate players
I can help you move up a notch or two from Scruggs to melodic and single string exercise playing note for note some fun Texas swing, Irish and American fiddle tunes including New Grass stuff. Work on improvisation and solo neck strategies.
Advanced
With an advanced player I act more as a consultant. Advanced can mean many things, but remember that Gershwin took piano lessons to the day he died. I still take lessons occasionally with the masters. You could always use another point of view and another advanced player's insight.
Although I have played bluegrass and fiddle tunes for years, I mostly play jazz standards and early century swing with an acoustic combo. 3 mandolins, fiddle and a gypsy swing guitarist.
The style I play is based on what Bela Fleck and Tony Trischka have done for years - a blend of 3 finger, single string and melodic. Although the tunes range in keys, major and minor, I play out of an open G position and do not use a capo.
