This is fantastic! Honestly i've had my banjo for about 4 months going on five and this is the easiest way for me to learn new songs. much appreciated! This is why i joined this site!

I'm glad to be of help. I have some new videos coming which cover modes, fingerboard theory and modes, as well as improvisation tricks. They will focus on chords as templates for melodies, and also dig into the use of substitution chords. It will hopefully make a lot of elusive concepts easier to understand.

Does anyone know where i can find the high part to FMB? Rob's video is amazing but is there a missing piece?

Ive been trying to play FMB along with a video of Earl Scrugs, Steve Martin, and friends, the one with Marty Stewart, Randy Scruggs, Vince Gill, etc, tha they put together for a music video. The timing is much different than how i ususally play FMB, ALOT quicker and seems to have a different beat. i can sort of keep up but I seem to loose a note or 2 in the rolls, especially the last tag lick before the breaks. Not sure if a metronome would help, or if its just a matter of practice. Any suggestions?

I just finished going through all of the videos in this series. I can finally play FMB! This was the entire reason I picked up a banjo in the first place! Granted, I'm not quite perfectly clean and up to full speed yet (I can get through practice companion B just fine, C is a little too fast yet), but just to know that I can play through the whole song means so much. Thank you for all you have posted on this site!

Todd, A lot of the videos with 7 or 8 banjo players taking turns become an amalgamation of styles and each tries to accommodate the other in the feat to the best of their ability. It is rarely the optimum setting for performance. It is a fun thing to do I'm sure but I wouldn't be surprised if it was quite a bit from the original.

Dwayne, I am glad it is working for you. I changed one of the rolls to make it easier to play quickly for the intermediate player. When you have it up to the proper speed, you can look at the middle section for Clinch Mountain Backstep, and you will see that I cover the proper "abbreviated" forward roll that will allow you to make it more like the original.

I finally got the first portion of Clinch Mountain backstep up to speed.  Have the remaining vids been posted?  As a relatively new banjo player (guitar player since '64),  I really enjoy your teaching methods particularly your comments on how one should practice before moving forward. Thank-you.

Thanks Rob for your videos! I just picked up the banjo again after 30 years and wanted to learn FMB first! So far! Your instruction has been great. Lot different from the old days when you pounded it out with a teacher saying "No that's not right" I like the internet You Tube method better. I am finding that 2nd fret 4th string hammer on from the 1st then pluck 1 string 2nd fret rolling up or backwards to be slow and awkward but I hear you play it this way too in slo mo. So I guess I'm doing it right. It's just picking up speed for the foward roll after that with a repeat hammer on the 2nd fret 4th string thumb pick is hard to get as well. To do it faster that is.

I don't know what to say folks. This is more than kind. I did not expect so many folks to respond. I will have money for the passports which is the first purchase, and one I have never done before, and was not expecting such a fee. I can only say thanks from the bottom of my heart.

I have found myself spending the evening writing thank you letters, but I do have more videos on the editing floor right now. I hope to have time to publish within the next couple of days.

If you look at the vid that subbuteo posted, you will see the forward roll the way it is supposed to be played. I will do another series for the more advanced players that will cover that in a month or so, but in the mean time, I have finished my Clinch Mountain Backstep vids, and my mode videos. I am editing as I write. I have to make room on my Mac's hard drive, so they must be published soon.

Yeah , Those passports have gotten pricey, a little cheaper if you take you own photos, Now you need one just to go to Canada and The Islands, before a drivers licence and birth certificate was fine.

and every time it was the worst pain Ive ever had short of the toothaches i suffer...so how bad was it ? theres like 50 bones to break and some are the worst ones to break like the tendons attached to one bone and the achellies heel has a bone its bad to break because you never walk the same

Powerful thread.  Play the Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze//Foxy Lady chord, and plug in the rock rhythm, (think Hendrix/Skynyrd) instead of the normal Em (E major if you're Lester Flatt), and try that chord and rhythm, and get the timing difference.   What is that chord?  It's not traditional, but it does have four notes in it.

Sorry I have been so swamped. My wife gets her cast of in another couple of weeks. I have been doing all of the grocery shopping and let me tell you, I hate it. I am a rookie. Those ladies in the market are brutal with the baskets. I really have no idea where anything is, nor do I know where to go after dance practice to pick up my daughter. I am really out of my element trying to do all of her stuff and mine too.

Life should be back to normal craziness soon.

Thanks to your YouTube lessons (which surpass almost all others in quality) I quickly learned Cripple Creek and Foggy Mountain Breakdown. I will be keeping an eye out for your DVD and will definitely purchase it should it (fingers crossed) get a UK release!
