It is wrong. I have had a bad case of Popeye elbow and haven't done beans for the last few weeks, hoping that it heals on its own. Horrible tendonitis from too much guitar playing. I was recording a few projects and went a bit overboard. I strained something, but a couple of days later, a watery sack of fluid grew to mammoth proportions on my elbow and I am cooling my jets on the playing for now.

By the way it looks, I should be back to normal in a decade or two.

Sounds like olecranon bursitis. Take advil or aleve and get elastic sleeve to put pressure to hopefully get fluid down. Last resort draining it and splint. Usually from banging or resting on point of elbow. Your posts are great and very generous of you.

This is kind of funny. I just posted a MP3 (my first) of me attempting the first part of Foggy Mountain Breakdown. I have been learning it for only about a week and I am a self taught banjo player for less then a year. I am struggling with the pull off getting the sound right so I really look forward to watching your videos and seeing if they can help me. I am trying to memorize the song then work on timing then finally work on the clarity. I love the flow of this song so I hope to do it proud in a few months. Thanks for your support of us newbies!!

Krissy, I know that people have trouble with pull offs. I would try pulling downward a bit, without hitting the string, until you get a sound generated by the pull off itself, not using the right hand at all. This gets your pull off more solid. A lot of times, people lift off more than they pull off until they realize the need to generate sound with the left hand as well.

It is hard.

I changed the format for my lessons a bit. I was trying to use one of my videos to help a student out with a part on Skype, because I had no banjo near my computer. The result was, I saw how annoying the continual litany of string names and fret numbers was to hear.

I have replaced this with a written number system. I would be interested in feedback. I am finishing the rest of this tune with a similar production, but if folks don't like it as much, I will go back to the earlier method. If everyone likes it, I will probably continue using the annotations instead of a voice over.

Rob, I realize you've heard it a million times, but thank you so much! I, like so many others, have been blessed by your generousity as well as your talent. My Foggy Mountain Breakdown is so much more musical after having worked through your videos, and I look forward to learning Cold Frosty Morning with you. It's a very pretty piece.

I didn't find your voice-overs annoying, but the annotations will save me going back over the same material again and again just to "catch" everything. I did like seeing your face from time to time, though, in the FMBD series because I felt like you were looking me in the eye and playing along with me instead of vice vesa. Crazy, yes, especially since your videos have been viewed thousands and thousands of times by thousands of people (or as in my case, viewed thousands of times by just a few people?)

Just make sure your rhythm section plays E MAJOR not E minor,,,listen to Lester...I am very proud to make this my 500th post since it is so controversial but completely right.  Of that I am sure.  It drives a lot of folks crazy but that is how it is played on the original version.  Sincerely, Richard Bull

You are right on about the E Major. It is in the recording.

I think it's Paul Warren. He is dragging his fiddle bow across the G#, (actually A because the recording was sped up half a step) and that clearly resonates as an E major. (I think that was Paul Warren playing fiddle on that recording, but I might be mistaken.)

I have seen Earl play it, and everyone that backs him up plays an E minor, so if that's the way the master played it, I will too.

But there is something magic about that old Mercury 45 that I wore out. I never get tired of that sound. E Major is cool with me. I made the guitarist that worked with me play it, and it didn't sound the same. I worked with a fiddle player who played it over the guitarists Em, and it sounded like the same buzz on the record. Try it. Maybe it's just me.
