They are just for looks. Feel free to remove them so you can drum the head with better technique.

Banjo strings are a survival tool. Keep a few spares in your backpack so you can use them to make snares if you're lost in the woods and need to get some rabbits. :D

Actually I do keep snare wire for that occasion in my tackle box for when I used to hike in to remote Northern Ontario lakes before we had GPS trail stuff.

Ask a silly question....

Geez, looks like everyday's a school day.  yes   I was unfamiliar with the  ^^  name, and had always thought of it as a toy, but apparently 'tain't so!  [A tidbit from following link: Although often mistaken for a toy, it is a genuine musical instrument used in cultural rituals, education, and rhythm-based music.]

Considering how  s-l-o-w  my banjo journey [cough, sputter, cough] has been ...................... ???

some plains indian tribes used them also called spin drums ,, for ceremony and teaching.  pretty smart idea .....

At close range, also good for waking teenagers at a decent time of the morning

You have vocal chords to communicate with , A stringed instrument does the same with its strings .

Please, please, please correct your usage!! in the response above, use the 2 words, "...every day..." Use "everyday" as an adjective when describing a person, place, thing, or idea, that is, "nouns."

I suspect 'tain't could well be another ignominious faux pas.*  sad

* Dunno whether that should be italicized, or put into quotation marks, or just what.  Guidance mucho appreciated ........ though I'm not saying it'll be adopted/implemented.  wink

The strings are there to prevent the fretboard from fraying.

If a string breaks when you’re gone, did it make a noise?
