Wildwood Resonator

From johnliner on 1/14/2016 2:53:19 PM

Anybody here have experience with the Wildwood Resonators? Am thinking of buying one and I wonder what you all think of them. I know this is mainly a clawhammer site, but I don't know how to clawhammer. (Maybe someday. I really like the sound.)

Anyway, I welcome opinions. I will definitely buy a Wildwood but I'd like the first one to be a Bluegrass resonator.

By the way, apropos of nothing, I once owned a Gibson RB-800. It was Ok. I guess. sorta.

I've got a Paragon with an A scale neck; just as loud and rich as my Gibson Mastertone. And the woods, trim, and inlays are superior imo.

A friend of mine had one years ago (and maybe still does). It was a great banjo.

The resonator Wildwoods I have seen are loud and clear all the way up the neck and have great tone. They are slightly heavier than some brands, probably due to the block rims, but I personally like the block rims better than the 3-ply rims. Fit and finish on all modern Wildwoods are superior, especially for the price range.

I really like the Artist model in walnut - wish I had one!

There is an old review of the Wildwood Paragon( or one of the other resonator Wildwoods) from Frets Magazine, which you may still be able to access, though Frets went out in the 90's. Objective, comprehensive, informative review, and also extremely positive. Their review standard was" how does this instrument compare to other similar instruments in the same price range". I found a copy of the review connected to the Wildwood site. I have played a Paragon bluegrass style for nearly 30 years and love it.
