absolutely not John. It's always been this way so we are all used to it, I obviously don't know the ins and outs of the US law, but I'm assuming when you buy a car from someone, you have to transfer the ownership over etc ?  It's just some paperwork we need to take care of.

With mostly no granting of permission needed..

I guess you are right.  We have enough paperwork here to make it an annoyance, but not nearly as much as you.  As you may know, here when we sell a gun to a friend, neighbor, or even a stranger there is zero paperwork required (at least in my state and I think all states).  If a gun is illegal, say like an automatic rifle, it is illegal to own and sell.  However, you can get a special permit to own automatic weapons and you are not free to sell them to another individual without going through a significant amount of paperwork.

Took care of sharp edges..n milled the flat fer a scope mount..

Might extract 2 broken mount screws..
That is the way the bartel came with thos broken screws..

Thanks for the explanation John.  I find it really interesting how the laws and rules vary country to country.  As a civilian, even if they were legal in the U.K. I wouldn't ever have the urge to own an automatic weapon - I was much happier using one when HM Government was footing the ammunition bill !

Al, how would you extract the screws? I've a set of the anti clockwise screw in extractors but have only ever used them on bigger diameter stuff - can you get baby ones for the diameter of those mount screws or do you have another technique?

First i will try a left handed drill bit...
They work most of the time..
N they do make tiny screw extractors ike yours..

Antque ones work the best..

Neither do I have any desire to own an automatic weapon.  Like you, they were fun when using Uncle Sam's ammo (my platoon had a 50 Cal.), but ammo is way to expensive to be popping off rounds at a high rate.

7.62 was as big as I got to play with.  the trick here was not to be too good with the gun, as you know, fun to shoot...less fun to carry!

Generally, a Marine platoon is not going to rate a .50 Cal. machine gun, but my platoon had a compound in the little village of Tam Ky (Viet Nam), so we needed more protection.  We also had a 60mm mortar (funny story about that I will tell some day).  During training, I always had great sympathy for the M60 machine gunner and his assistant who carried the tripod and ammo.  It was not fun running with that extra weight.  Usually a couple of the bigger guys were picked for this job.

What i did to remove the broke scope mount screw..
Was to grind a broke right hand drill bit to grab in reverse..
Cleaned up the threads with a tap.. n mounted the scope..
I may add a nother screw via a new hole later to have 3 screws total..

I'm starting to do more with metal and in fact used a bolt extractor for the first time recently when I snapped the jockey wheel handle on a horse trailer - I was amazed and relieved how easily it worked (usually with my luck, if I fell in a bucket of tits I'd come out sucking my thumb).

I see you're a Milwaukee man....I'm a Makita man myself, but Milwaukee seem to be getting a good presence over here. I spend a lot of time on construction sites and 10 years ago you wouldn't see any, now they're definitely making an impact.

You can have them. I’m quite sure you know this, it does require a very strong action to handle this heavy of a bullet weight.
I have a Ruger BlackHawk. I used to shoot some fairly heavy loads. I would test for penetration using wet newspaper. They don’t expand, and they would penetrate an unbelievable amount.

Recoil, even with a moderate load, is severe.
I don’t shoot this anymore.
I think a rifle in .45 colt would be awesome.
I know they are available commercially. In lever action and in single shot.
