Fiddle alert! Sam and Elzie was posted as a tune of the week, and I thought it sounded familiar. On asking, I was reminded that the Illinois name is Crooked Road, and I had played along with it 6 days previously! I've been messing with it on the fiddle, but I had to clip out a small bit of what I had recorded to end up with something that had the minimum number of mistakes.

This is from our October 8, 2008 jam night. It's early in the evening so we are just one fiddle, a hammered dulcimer, 2 guitars, 2 mandolins and I am on the cello banjo. Our fast fiddler had not yet shown up. I have seen this tune published in A, but as far as I can remember we have always played it in D around here. In going through my old copy of Miles Krassens book I found a tune list of mine from around 1981 and I had it in D then, although I do not remember where I learned it. Maybe from Lyle.

I haven't looked into the history of this tune, but I sure like it. I've played along with it a few time over the years. Last month we had a mini-festival in Springfield (IL) and after the performance was done seven of us stayed around to play some more. After doing "Rocky Road to Jordan" Laura S (fiddler) started "Dubuque" and it really grabbed me this time. Now it's been my obsession tune on fiddle for a couple of weeks, but last night I found that it's fun as solo banjo, too.

I was listening to an old TOTW called Arkansas Hoosier, and was reminded of Durang's Hornpipe. I don't think I had ever played it solo before so I listened to a few versions on BHO (there are many). Here is a version I just recorded to help me remember the tune.
