This is a version of the tune from Billy Mathews. I'm on my Bicentennial banjo, in regular G tuning.

A more descriptive title would be "Untitled Tune on Page 12 of the Hamblen Collection." I got this from a posting by slc here on the hangout: http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/200408 He got it from "the Hamblen Collection, a collection of tunes originally played by David Hamblen (1809-1893) and notated by his grandson A. Porter Hamblen." I just had to work it out--I've never played anything like that before. I don't quite have it right, and I'm still at the stage of trying to play it the same way through each time, if I get familiar enough I see where I can add some variation.

This is a Carter Family song. I checked it over and it is not in ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC, and the Library of Congress shows three copyrights on it, two for "compilation of sounds," and one for an arrangement. So, to the best of my knowledge it's OK to post here.

Could anyone help me on information on this tune? Is it modern?

I'm working with Mark and Sharon on a project, and one of the tunes is Hell Among the Yearlings. It's a great twisty tune, but I can't do some of the syncopation that she does on fiddle. I'm playing the Tradesman capoed up to D.

Sharon Graf (fiddle), Mark Mathewson (guitar), Erich Schroeder (banjo). This was from a week before the solo version that I posted.

I'm playing both fiddle & banjo. I did banjo first, so the fiddle sound like an intermediate fiddler trying to follow a banjo player (who is playing as slow as he can). To be honest, I'm not sure I've played it on banjo since then. I hope I've gotten better on the fiddle.

This is my interpretation of a fine tune written by Laurel Premo, and included on the album called "The Right Hands 'Round" by Bowhunter String Band. Really nice CD.

I like Sacred Harp songs. I'm not sure if this is one, but it was recorded by J. T. Allison's Sacred Harp Singers, 1927 in Richmond, Indiana. I first heard it in that 1927 version on an LP that I checked out of the library in the early 1980s.

Great tune composed by Chirps Smith. He has a version on his "Down in Little Egypt" CD, available at http://www.cdbaby/cd/lynnsmith I post it here with his permission, thanks Chirps.

Well, I was listening to John D's fine version of Lark on the Strand which he said he got from the one posted by Yigal Zan. So I went over there and noticed the version of Illinois Rickets which reminded me that I like that tune, so I listened to the version by Yigal and one on youtube by Chirps, and then squeezed out this version. What a fun tune.

Last weekend I was at Breakin' Up Winter in Tennessee and had a great time. This is one of the tunes that grabbed my ear, and it's simple enough to learn quickly. The tune is from Kentucky fiddler John Sayler. I recorded this while waiting for people to show up at our twice-a-month jam.

Cool tune. I haven't read much on it, but the Fiddlers Companion says it's in G rather than in A as I do it here. I worked out this version from hearing it done by Illinois fiddler Wayne Schell.
